The chief constable of West Midlands Police is expected to resign following mounting criticism over his handling of a decision to bar Maccabi Tel Aviv supporters from attending a match against Aston Villa in Birmingham last year, according to British media. UK Interior Minister Shabana Mahmood said she no longer has confidence in Chief Constable Craig Guildford after he acknowledged that flawed evidence presented to lawmakers played a role in justifying the ban, which police had said was based solely on fan safety concerns.

The match was classified as high risk, with police citing previous incidents involving Maccabi Tel Aviv fans, including a Europa League game in Amsterdam where Dutch authorities later said Israeli supporters were targeted. Additional scrutiny followed revelations that police had also referenced a West Ham match that never occurred. Guildford initially told MPs the mistakes stemmed from a basic Google search and denied the use of artificial intelligence, but later admitted in a letter that the errors were caused by the use of Microsoft Copilot, intensifying criticism of the force’s decision making and transparency.
