Ambassadors from the European Union’s 27 member states will hold an emergency meeting tomorrow in Brussels after U.S. President Donald Trump vowed to impose a series of escalating tariffs on European allies unless they agree to allow the United States to purchase Greenland, Reuters reports. The meeting, set to begin at 5:00 PM local time, was called by Cyprus, which currently holds the EU’s rotating presidency.

Trump’s announcement outlined 10% tariffs on goods from several European countries beginning February 1, with the threat to increase to 25 % by June 1 if the U.S. is not permitted to advance its bid to acquire Greenland; a proposal firmly rejected by Denmark and other European capitals.

The summit of EU ambassadors is expected to focus on how the bloc should respond collectively to what many leaders describe as economic coercion that could undermine transatlantic relations. European Union officials, including Commission President Ursula von der Leyen and European Council President António Costa, have warned that the tariff threat could trigger a “dangerous downward spiral” in ties with the U.S., potentially harming both sides’ prosperity and distracting from crucial issues like security and the war in Ukraine.
