Elizabeth Holmes Asks Trump to Commute Prison Sentence

Disgraced Theranos founder Elizabeth Holmes has formally asked President Donald Trump to commute her federal prison sentence, according to the U.S. Justice Department’s Office of the Pardon Attorney.

Holmes, 41, is currently serving an 11‑plus‑year sentence for defrauding investors with false claims about her company’s blood‑testing technology, and she still has nearly six years to go before her scheduled release in late 2031. She was convicted in 2022 on multiple counts of wire fraud and conspiracy for misleading investors about Theranos’ capabilities.

Her request, filed in 2025 and listed as “pending” on the Justice Department’s website, seeks an early end to her prison term but would not erase her conviction or the restitution she owes if granted. If President Trump agrees to commute her sentence, Holmes would be released earlier than her current Dec. 30, 2031 release date, though she would still be responsible for restitution and other legal obligations. The White House has not publicly commented on her petition, and it’s unclear when or if Trump will act on the request.
