We are writing in response to the recent video portraying Lakewood’s Orthodox Jewish growth as an “invasion,” alleging welfare dependence and economic non-productivity.

Calling lawful demographic growth an “invasion” is rhetoric, not analysis. Families moving legally, purchasing homes through voluntary transactions, opening businesses, raising children, and voting is not subversion. It is American civic life.

The claim that Lakewood is largely composed of adults who “study, have many children, and live off welfare” is false. The clear majority of Orthodox adults work in healthcare, finance, real estate, retail, trades, technology, and small business. The township’s commercial activity reflects earned income, not dependency.

Lakewood also has one of the largest private school populations in New Jersey, with tens of thousands of children enrolled in nonpublic religious schools. Those families still pay full property taxes that fund the publ school system. Aside from transportation reimbursement required under state law, they do not utilize the public system they help finance. That is contribution, not exploitation.

SNAP eligibility is determined by federal formula. Larger households qualify at higher income thresholds by statute. That is math. There is no publicly documented evidence of systemic, religion-specific SNAP fraud in Lakewood. If it existed at scale, enforcement data would show it.

Per capita income statistics are misleading in high child communities. Dividing income across eight or ten dependents lowers the figure mechanically. It does not prove unemployment.

The comparison to foreign “invasions” is especially irresponsible. Lakewood is a community of American citizens participating in markets and elections. Equating domestic religious growth with geopolitical migration narratives is inflammatory and inaccurate.

Lakewood and the surrounding towns are also among the strongest GOP voting bases in New Jersey, civically engaged, family oriented, and highly consistent at the ballot box. Recklessly associating law abiding American Orthodox families with “invasion” rhetoric (or likening them to unrelated immigrant narratives) is not only inaccurate, it is politically self-defeating for anyone trying to build or retain that coalition.

As for being “unwelcoming”: Lakewood is open to anyone who wishes to live there. No one is barred from purchasing property or operating a business. Equal access under civil law is the American standard.

Religious participation follows religious law. Orthodox observance requires proximity, walking to synagogue on the Sabbath, sustaining kosher infrastructure, supporting religious schools and communal institutions. That is not exclusion; it is protected religious practice.

If the concern is municipal finance, present the balance sheets. If the concern is zoning, debate the ordinances. If the concern is school funding, analyze the formulas. But if the language shifts to “invasion,” then the discussion has moved from policy to identity. That distinction matters.

Buying property. Paying taxes. Working. Raising families. Living by one’s faith.

That is not un-American.

It is America.
