Judge Blocks Trump Administration From Withholding SNAP Funds

A federal judge in San Francisco today blocked the Trump administration from cutting off funding to 22 Democratic-led states that administer food stamp benefits unless they turn over detailed data on millions of recipients.

U.S. District Judge Maxine Chesney issued a preliminary injunction halting the administration’s effort to withhold Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) funds based on recent demands for expanded recipient information.

The states sued, arguing the data requests exceeded federal authority and put recipients’ privacy at risk. The ruling keeps funding in place while the case moves forward.
