Mamdani Seeks $21B Federal Funding for Sunnyside Yard Housing Project

During NYC Mayor Zohran Mamdani’s meeting today with President Trump, he sought more than $21 billion in federal grants for an ambitious housing project. Mamdani wants the funding to build a platform over Sunnyside Yard in Queens so the city can construct 12,000 new affordable homes, including 6,000 Mitchell‑Lama‑style units, along with parks, schools and health clinics. City officials say the plan could also create 30,000 union jobs and be the largest housing and infrastructure investment in New York City in over 50 years.

The idea for housing on the site was first floated under former Mayor Bill de Blasio, but stalled under Mamdani’s predecessor Eric Adams.

In March 2020, officials at the city Economic Development Commission estimated the project to construct a platform and thousands of new affordable units, along with offices and public space, would cost about $14 billion. The mayor’s office did not explain the difference between that estimate and the new $21 billion federal funding request.

The meeting was previously unannounced. Mamdani’s team presented Trump with a mock newspaper front page reading “Trump to City: Let’s Build,” a reference to a historic Daily News cover, and posted a photo of the session on social media. Both sides agreed to continue talks in the coming weeks.
