Justice Department Sues Five States Over Voter Roll Access

The U.S. Department of Justice filed federal lawsuits today against Kentucky, New Jersey, Oklahoma, Utah, and West Virginia for failing to provide complete voter registration lists after repeated requests. The department says the states did not turn over full records as required under federal law.

The suits were filed by the Justice Department’s Civil Rights Division. With these cases, a total of 29 states and the District of Columbia are now involved in similar litigation over voter registration data. Attorney General Pamela Bondi said the department is acting to ensure accurate and well‑maintained voter rolls, which are essential for election integrity.

Officials in the targeted states have resisted providing the requested records, citing privacy protections and state law. The lawsuits are expected to be contested in court.
