Israel Considers Historic Honor for Argentine President Javier Milei

Reports indicate that Transportation Minister Miri Regev intends to propose Argentine President Javier Milei as a torchbearer for the upcoming Independence Day ceremony.

The invitation is meant to honor Milei’s staunch support for the State of Israel and the Jewish people since he took office. 

Lighting a torch at Mount Herzl is the highest civil honor in Israel and is traditionally reserved for Israeli citizens or Jewish individuals who have personally contributed to the state.

Because current regulations generally exclude foreign heads of state, the Ministerial Committee would have to formally amend the rules to allow his participation.

President Milei is already expected to be in Israel for the holiday to coincide with the planned relocation of the Argentine embassy to Jerusalem.

This proposal follows a similar high-profile invitation previously extended to U.S. President Donald Trump, who was invited to receive the Israel Prize and is also reportedly being considered for a torch-lighting honor.
