I’ve been watching your messages about the absolute ludicrous new Purim collecting situation with the prize levels. Essentially them collecting for their own prizes….

As a kid I loved going collecting for my Yeshiva in elementary and then high school. There was a special charm to the ‘give and take’ we had with the regular balei batim and all the way up to the gevirim.

Now, as I am BH zoche to be on the giving end, I still enjoy these special moments of the year.

I have an open door and give out what used to be hand written checks that are now donors funds coupons for hours without a break. Literally.

To be honest, I love every second of it. Purim is my most cherished time of year.

I listen to every person. Try to look them in the eye and connect for those few seconds and then give something I feel appropriate. It feels as if someone is whispering into my ear how much to give. I can’t explain it.

From little children to elderly Rosh yeshiva come through my door and every one is cherished.

I never asked what they collect for because I need to verify, no, I simply wanted to connect to their “tzveck”, and if it was personal – so much more meaningful.

After all, Kol Haposhet Yad – Nosen Lo.

So many situations I’ve heard paint a beautiful story of who we are as a nation, caring for others. This message would be too long for me to give you those stories. But believe me it’s heartwarming.

After much thought and in full agreement to your messages of this prize nonsense, I am preparing a booklet of singles (and if I get soft because after all it’s Purim and who can say no, maybe I’ll up it to 5s). I’ll continue to give to them but it will be the absolute minimum.

I don’t know if you can, but if you can somehow publicize or respond privately with the list of those organizations, I would really appreciate knowing who they are ahead of time.
