Tuesday night will feature a striking reddish moon as the earth blocks sunlight from reaching the moon, causing a total lunar eclipse that will be visible in most of North America.

* The so-called “blood moon” will last for about an hour, in the early morning. The best views will be from the western portion of the continent, as well as Australia, eastern Asia and the Pacific. Totality and the resulting bloody hue will begin at 6:04 a.m. Eastern Standard Time and end almost an hour later. “It’s as if all of the world’s sunrises and sunsets are projected onto the moon,” NASA said in a statement.

* Fewer than one-third of lunar eclipses are total lunar eclipses, so most locations on Earth experience the rust-colored moon around once every 2.5 years. The next blood moon will take place on December 31, 2028.
