Greenland Demands NATO Protection as Trump’s “Acquire It One Way or Another” Comments Spark Diplomatic Firestorm

Greenland’s government has publicly called on NATO to guarantee its defense, firmly rejecting any notion of a U.S. takeover after President Donald Trump reiterated his intention to secure control of the Arctic territory “one way or another.” Greenland, a self-governing territory within the Kingdom of Denmark and covered under NATO’s collective defense framework, emphasized that its security should remain multilateral, not subject to unilateral action by any single ally. 

The demand comes amid an escalating standoff in which Trump has argued that the United States needs Greenland for strategic reasons, to preempt potential Russian or Chinese influence in the Arctic, and has not ruled out using military force as an option. Trump’s comments have rattled European capitals and NATO allies, with some warning that any U.S. action against a fellow NATO member would jeopardize the alliance’s future.
