Opposition Slams Coalition Plan That Would Undercut Netanyahu Trial

Opposition leaders sharply criticized a proposed coalition bill that would repeal the crimes of fraud and breach of trust, offenses for which Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is currently standing trial. They warned the move amounts to an effort to shield those in power from accountability. Yesh Atid leader Yair Lapid said the coalition has “declared war on a democratic, developed Israel,” arguing the proposal is not reform but a sweeping coup that would undermine the country’s democratic foundations. He pledged that his party would oppose what he described as an attempt to turn Israel into a corrupt non democracy, vowing to fight the bill in the Knesset, in the streets, and in the courts.

Democrats party chair Yair Golan echoed the condemnation, calling the initiative a “mafia like” maneuver by leaders seeking to evade justice. He said the legislation sends a dangerous signal that deceiving the public and betraying trust is acceptable as long as political power is preserved. Golan warned that the proposal represents a direct attack on the rule of law and urged the public to reject corruption becoming normalized, saying the current government must ultimately be replaced.
