Israel Hacked Popular Iranian Prayer App to Urge Defections, Resistance
A widely used Iranian prayer timing app called BadeSaba Calendar was hacked, reportedly by Israel, during the early hours of today’s military strikes on Iran, sending a series of push notifications to users across the country.
The messages, which arrived over about 30 minutes, urged members of Iran’s armed forces to surrender, seek amnesty or join opposition “forces of liberation,” according to screenshots and reporting.
The first notification appeared at around 9:52 a.m. Tehran time with the phrase “Help Has Arrived,” followed by a message at about 10:02 a.m. promising amnesty to those who take up arms against the regime. A third notification at about 10:14 a.m. said: “Lay down your weapons or join the forces of liberation. For a free Iran.”
Cybersecurity analysts confirmed that users of the Bade Sabah had received notifications around the time of the strikes, but have not been able to identify the source of the hack.
BadeSaba Calendar has been downloaded more than five million times in Iran and is normally used to track daily prayer times. The notifications were reportedly timed to coincide with joint Israeli and U.S. strikes on Iranian targets.
