MTA to Test Paid Audio Ads in Subway and Commuter Rail Stations
The Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) will launch a “Station Audio Advertisements” pilot in June, introducing paid 30‑second audio commercials at select subway and commuter rail stations. The ads can play as often as once every 10 minutes through the same speakers used for train and service announcements.
The pilot will initially feature media, entertainment, and sports promotions, with volume capped at 75 decibels. The ads cannot mimic official service announcements or emergency alerts to prevent rider confusion.
Riders are criticizing the plan, saying frequent commercial audio could hurt the commuter experience. The MTA says it will evaluate the pilot based on rider feedback before deciding on any expansion.
