Report: Trump’s Iran Strike Followed Weeks of Israeli, Saudi Pressure

President Trump’s launch of Operation Epic Fury against Iran today, alongside Israel, followed weeks of behind-the-scenes pressure from Israel and Saudi Arabia, The Washington Post reported, citing officials and regional sources.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu publicly pushed for strikes. Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman made several private calls urging action while publicly supporting diplomacy and denying Saudi territory would be used. He warned that delaying could make Iran stronger and more dangerous.

Trump told Axios the operation was driven by the collapse of U.S.-Iran nuclear talks in Geneva and intelligence that Iran was rebuilding nuclear facilities damaged in the June Israel-Iran war. “The Iranians got close and then pulled back… I understood from that that they don’t really want a deal,” he said.

Preparing his speech announcing the operation, Trump also compiled a 25-year record of Iranian-linked attacks, noting “every month they did something bad, blew something up or killed someone.”

According to additional reports, Trump decided to join Israel’s planned preemptive strike. In early October 2025, Netanyahu learned Iran’s nuclear and missile programs were being restored and moved underground, prompting the IDF and Mossad to prepare for another strike.

In late December, Netanyahu briefed Trump at Mar-a-Lago and received approval. After Iran massacred tens of thousands of protesters in early January, Trump deemed intervention necessary and ordered U.S. forces to assist Israel in intelligence and mobilization.

Iran began positioning missiles toward Israel and U.S. bases, reaching a critical decision point. Israel then launched its largest-ever sortie, deploying over 200 fighter jets and eliminating the supreme leader, his family, and top advisors.
