U.S. President Vows 10% Tariffs on European Allies Opposing U.S. Control of Greenland

President Donald Trump said today that eight European nations will face a 10 % import tariff starting Feb. 1 because they opposed U.S. efforts to gain control of Greenland, a semi-autonomous Danish territory seen by Trump as strategically vital. If no agreement is reached, the tariffs would rise to 25% on June 1, Trump added, framing the move as leverage to secure a deal for a so-called “complete and total purchase” of the island.

Countries targeted include Denmark, Norway, Sweden, France, Germany, the United Kingdom, the Netherlands, and Finland, which are all NATO partners whose leaders have rejected U.S. efforts to assert control over Greenland.

In response to President Trump’s tariff announcement, European leaders strongly defended Denmark’s sovereignty over Greenland and denounced the U.S. tariff threats as destabilizing to NATO unity.
