U.S. Wholesale Prices Rise More Than Expected in January

U.S. wholesale prices increased more than expected in January, the Labor Department reported Friday. The Producer Price Index, which tracks inflation before it reaches consumers, rose 0.5% from December and 2.9% from January 2025, above economists’ forecasts of 0.3% for the month and 1.6% year over year.

Core wholesale prices, which exclude food and energy, jumped 0.8% for the month and 3.6% annually, driven by higher prices for services and retailers’ profit margins.

Energy and food prices eased, but the strength in overall wholesale inflation shows cost pressures may still be moving through the economy, a key indicator for future consumer inflation and Federal Reserve policy.
